This image circulating on WhatsApp claims people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 would allegedly develop AIDS, citing data from the German government.
So, did government data from Germany really suggest that fully vaccinated people will develop AIDS and is this information legitimate?
Background
It is no longer News that Covid-19 has been a dire cause for concern world-over. However, when the first vaccine was administered in the U.K. on December 8, 2020, a little over a year since the first case was reported, there was relief and hope that the pandemic would soon be vanquished.
One problem however stood in the way – Vaccine Hesitancy. This was engendered by a lot of misinformation about the efficacy and safety of the COVID-19 Vaccines. These concerns ranged from blood clots to death. The World Health Organization (WHO) has allayed most of these concerns, but the question of safety is yet to be fully resolved.
Verification
A reverse search of the image leads to an article on the Natural News website which claims that government (German) data suggests that people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will allegedly develop AIDS.
The article references information published by The Exposé, a U.K. based alternative media which first published the information on January 2, 2022. The article bears the headline ‘Official German Government data suggests the Fully Vaccinated will develop Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome by the end of January 2022’.
The data referenced by The Exposé is from the Robert Koch Institut (RKI), the German government’s central scientific institution in the field of Biomedicine.
This data was used to do extrapolated calculations which suggested that by the end of January, the COVID-19 vaccines’ efficacy would reach -100%. Besides, the article claims that owing to reducing efficacy, fully vaccinated people will allegedly develop “vaccine-mediated AIDS”.
The information published by The Exposé and Natural News is incorrect for the following reasons:
- The data published by RKI was erroneous and the figure 186 has since been updated to 1,097 as seen here
- The extrapolated calculations were wrong. This is what a spokesperson from RKI told Reuters:
“All in all it is not legitimate to extrapolate the value to the general population or to estimate vaccine effectiveness with such data.”
3. According to the CDC, one can only contract AIDS from the HIV virus and COVID-19 Vaccines do not contain HIV
This fact-check by Full Fact also provides more context into the erroneous data published by RKI.
Verdict
NO, fully vaccinated people will not develop AIDS and do not stand the risk.
