Conversations around electoral candidates’ academic credentials as presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recently sparked across various social media platforms. Complaints on various candidates were launched. Among those under scrutiny is Kakamega gubernatorial candidate Cleophas Malala on the credibility of his degree from USIU.
On May 29, 2022, a statement purportedly from USIU circulated on Twitter claiming that Malala was never a student at the institution. USIU, through a tweet, dismissed the statement as fake.

Verification
In an interview with Nyota TV, Malala shared that he was admitted at USIU to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Technology. He said that he was part of the graduating class of 2011 but picked his certificate in 2019.
Piga Firimbi accessed USIU’s 33rd graduation booklet for the class of 2011 and found that Cleophas Wakhungu Malalah indeed graduated with a Bachelor in Information Systems and Technology.
Verdict
Claims that Cleophas Malala did not graduate from USIU are FALSE.
