A post on X shared on July 14, 2024 claims to show police misconduct during an operation to retrieve bodies from the Kware dumpsite in Embakasi South Constituency. The images show police officers manhandling a man lying on the ground while other officers stand and watch.
Background
On July 12, 2024, at least six bodies, all female, were found in a dumpsite in Embakasi South constituency according to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The DCI adds that these bodies had a similar mode of killing. In three of the bags retrieved from this dumpsite were dismembered body parts. In a press briefing on July 14, 2024, the acting Inspector General of Police; Douglas Kanja confirmed the transfer of police officers from Kware Police Station to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation.
By July 15, 2024, the DCI confirmed that two more bodies had been retrieved and a suspect had been apprehended in connection with the murders. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, confessed to having killed 42 women and dumping their bodies at the quarry site between 2022 and July 11, 2024.
Verification
A reverse image search shows that the image showing police officers beating a protester was taken in 2014, according to a post by Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan photojournalist and human rights activist.
Verdict
While this tweet from July 13, 2024, confirms that the public obstructed homicide detectives from accessing the crime scene, the images shown are not related to the Kware dumpsite incident in Embakasi, Nairobi County.
