Does Agriculture Constitute 60% Of Kenya’s GDP as Claimed by Mithika Linturi?

Former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi made this claim during his vetting at the National Assembly as per Chapter 9 of the constitution. He stated the statistics while reiterating the government’s plan to invest heavily in the agricultural sector.

“Agriculture contributes almost 60% of our GDP and to transform this country we need to invest in agriculture”

Mithika Linturi was nominated to the Agriculture and Livestock docket by President William Ruto on October 27, 2022. Vetting of cabinet nominees at the National Assembly kicked off on October 17, 2022 till October 22, 2022. Agriculture is central to President William Ruto’s plan to reinvigorate the Kenyan economy which is still suffering due to below-average rainfall and other economic shocks.

According to the KNBS Kenya Economic Survey Report 2022, 22.4% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) comes from Agriculture. Inaccurate claims on the same were made by then Deputy President William Ruto in his Chatham House speech and debunked here by Piga Firimbi.
