A Facebook post containing an advertisement for jobs in Canada while promising a lucrative salary of Sh5,370,000 “and above” was published on July 30, 2021, containing this link that redirects to an application form.
Information on the application form further guarantees applicants a free Canadian visa and air ticket, free passport application as well as accommodation in Canada (see screenshot below).
Background
Information on the Canada Visa website shows that the government unveiled its Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023, which seeks to welcome more than 400,000 new immigrants each year in a bid to stimulate Canada’s economy by increasing the working population. Canada’s Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino also said that the COVID-19 pandemic has made it “vital” for Canada to strengthen its economy through immigration.
Verification
The Facebook post contains all the red flags of a potential scam as highlighted on the Government of Canada’s website. This post titled ‘How can I tell if an immigration website is a scam?’ cautions applicants to look out for “too good to be true” deals such as guaranteed entry to Canada and high-paying jobs. Another red flag mentioned is being charged a fee even before starting the application process. This is evident in the ad shared on Facebook.
According to the application form, applicants are required to send a fee of Sh500 before beginning any process. The form further warns that only the applicants who have paid the registration fee would be considered.
Piga Firimbi previously fact-checked a similar fake ad for jobs in Canada here. In this fact-check is attached a tweet from the High Commission of Canada in Kenya directing applicants interested in immigrating to Canada to visit the government’s official website so as to avoid potential scams.
It's easy for someone to build a website that looks professional. Don't be a victim of a scam. When applying to come to Canada, make sure you use the official Government of Canada website: https://t.co/DGDTyCXw7o pic.twitter.com/DO19ZhJGyu
